Kevin Durant Receives $285 Million Offer From Under Armour
Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant could jump ship from Nike to Under Armour, which reportedly offered a lucrative deal to the reigning NBA Most Valuable Player.
Darren Rovell of ESPN reported that Durant received a 10-year offer worth around $265 million to $285 million along with other deal sweeteners such as getting Under Armour stock and a certain community establishment that could be named after Durant's mother.
Rumors about a possible transfer to Under Armour began earlier this month and talks about it were confirmed after Durant visited Under Armour's headquarters last week.
Durant reportedly worked out using Under Armour shoes and spent the entire day at the headquarters. No formal offers were made last week, but the Thunder superstar was reportedly impressed with the incentives that were related to his personal life.
Durant's move to Under Armour is not yet set in stone, though, as Nike can to match any offer to the 25-year-old forward as stipulated in their current deal.
Nike reportedly put an offer that would pay Durant $20 million a year, including royalties. If Nike decides to match Under Armour's offer, Durant will have no other choice but to stay with his current company.
But from the looks of it, Nike will likely let go of Durant after not offering a new deal before a competitor gets into the picture.
"The company usually likes locking up its top talent and teams before those players can even go elsewhere. While its deal with Manchester United also came down to a situation where it declined the match Adidas' bid, it's more the norm that Nike renews before the competition can get a crack. Six years into James' seven-year, $87 million contract, Nike and James agreed to terms on the next deal," Rovell wrote.
If Nike decides not to match Under Armour's offer, Durant will be the second NBA star Nike will lose to UA after also losing out in the bidding war for Stephen Curry last season. The Golden State Warriors star signed a deal with Under Armour late last year, and will get his first signature shoe in February next year.
