A big surprise came out of Foxboro when it was learned that NFL All-Pro guard Logan Mankins had been traded to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

In return, the Patriots received a fourth-round pick and tight end Tim Wright. It's not everyday a first round pick All-Pro guard gets traded for an undrafted player.

Most people believe this is a big win for the Buccaneers, but after we weigh the pros and cons, both teams may come out even:

Pros

Save Money

According to ESPN, the Patriots will save $6.25 million this season and $7 million next season. The National Football League has a hard cap, meaning strict penalties follow against a team that goes over the salary cap rules. The Patriots have had a pretty mediocre defense in recent years. By saving over $13 million in cap space, they can focus next offseason on spending money on defense.

Mankins is obviously a more distinguished player, but his high cost may prohibit signing defensive players in the future. This also make it more likely that cornerback Darrelle Revis re-signs a long term deal this upcoming offseason.

Add Tight End Depth

Robert Gronkowski is the best tight end in the league when healthy. The only problem is he can't stay healthy. The Patriots had to add depth at the tight end position because they know there's a high possibility Gronkowski will get injured. There's still no official word on whether or not Gronkowski will be ready to start against the Miami Dolphins.

Last season as a rookie, Wright only started eight games but he played well. The 23-year-old tight end scored five touchdowns and recorded 571 yards on a subpar team. He shows potential.

Cons

Hurts Offensive Line

With Mankins gone, the Patriots offensive line is more vulnerable. Mankins has made the last five Pro Bowls going back to 2009. He was also the team captain. Last season Brady was sacked 40 times, his most since 2001 when he was sacked 41 times. If he thought last season was tough, imagine this year without Mankins.

Wright Still Unproven

Although Wright had a good season last year, there's still a lot to be seen from him. He did go undrafted in 2013, and a fourth round pick usually doesn't result in a franchise player. With the Patriots season set to kick off in less than two weeks, Wright doesn't have a lot of time to adjust to their system.

Wright will cost the Patriots significantly less money than Mankins, but can he offer the same advantages on the field?

Trading away Mankins certainly has its positives and negatives for the Patriots. The team saved a lot money going forward, knowing that Mankins wouldn't take a pay cut. If this trade means keeping Revis for the future, then it was well worth it.

On the flip side, Mankins was a great team leader and a terrific offensive lineman. Brady isn't a mobile quarterback, so he can't escape from pressured situations. As good as Wright played last season, he's still a very unproven player compared to Mankins offensively.
