Roger Federer will resume his quest for his 18th Grand Slam title, while Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams will also see action in Day 5 of the 2014 U.S. Open tennis on Friday at the Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York.

The second-seeded Federer, who has played well in recent tournaments, will face Sam Groth of Australia in the second round of the men's competition.

The 17-time Grand Slam champion, who is looking to win his sixth U.S. Open title, had an impressive debut, cruising to a comfortable 6-3, 6-4, 7-6 win against Marinko Matosevic of Australia in the first round where basketball legend Michael Jordan watched from Federer's guest box.

Fourth-seeded David Ferrer, who could face Federer in the semifinals, will also take court on Friday afternoon against Bernard Tomic, while sixth-seeded Tomas Berdych will face Martin Klizan.

Meanwhile, on the women's side, Maria Sharapova will look to advance to the fourth round when she collides with Sabine Lisicki of Germany on Friday night.

Sharapova struggled with her serves on Wednesday and committed 46 unforced errors, but the fifth-seeded Russian managed to escape with a come-from-behind 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Alexandra Dulgheru.

Sharapova, who is looking to win her sixth Grand Slam title, is 17-0 in night matches at the Arthur Ashe Stadium -- a record that she could not explain when asked about it after her first-round win against Maria Kirilenko on Monday.

"I'm not really sure because this is usually the time where I'm sleeping already," Sharapova said on Monday via NY Daily News. "I think you feel the goosebumps when you go out on a night match on Arthur Ashe."

Venus Williams is also expected to have a fair share of the spotlight when she takes on 13th-seeded Sara Errani.

Based on the way she is playing, Serena's older sister will be a favorite to win in their third-round match, but she is not taking any chances, knowing that Errani is also one of the best players in the tournament.

"Every time I've played her, I've had to be focused on every single point because she does not let up on any point no matter what the score is," Venus Williams said on Thursday via The Star. "If she's down 5-Love, 40-Love and never won a game in the match, she is in there still to win the match. That's my main thing: to stay focused and play my game."

The Williams-Errani match will be the second match of the morning session at the Arthur Ashe Stadium that is set to begin at 11 a.m. EST. The Federer-Groth showdown will start at 7 p.m. EST, followed by the Sharapova-Lisicki match.
