Soccer Transfer Update: Fernando Torres Excited to Join AC Milan on Loan Move From Chelsea
Chelsea FC and AC Milan agreed to a two-year loan deal that would send Fernando Torres to the Italian club, the Blues confirmed on Friday.
Torres, who has played in 110 Premier League games for the Blues since a record-setting move from Liverpool in 2011, expressed excitement over the opportunity to show what he is made off in the Italian Serie A.
The 30-year-old forward said on Saturday that he excited to wear the AC Milan jersey for the first time, saying that he will do his best to lead the club back to the Champions League next season, while also saying that he is open to staying for several years with the team.
"It is an honor and a privilege to wear this shirt," Torres said via Fox News. "I want to take Milan back into the Champions League and maybe stay here many years. I want to make the fans happy. I can't wait to start the season. I am happy to be starting a new stage in my career, delighted with the fans' welcome; I really want to start training and playing."
The veteran striker, who only played in 29 Premier League Games last season where he had five goals and five assists, also added that he will look to make noise in the Italian league to get another shot at playing for the Spain national team.
Torres was left out of the squad that competed in the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil where Spain failed to defend their title after getting eliminated in the group stage.
AC Milan coach Filippo Inzaghi is also thrilled to acquire Torres, saying that the Spain international could play a vital role this season, while also adding that he will do his best to help the veteran regain his old deadly form.
"I learned what kind of person he is. He seems to be very positive, it's not up to me to describe his worth on the pitch, it's up to me to help him return to being the player we all knew," Inzaghi said.
