Fantasy Football 2014 Sleepers, Rankings, & Draft: Top 5 Tight Ends for 2014 NFL Season
Drafting a tight end is extremely important in today's' fantasy football world.
More and more tight ends are asked to receive and catch, instead of the old school days of just blocking and hitting. Tight ends are putting up huge numbers in this pass first NFL, so it's critical to get a great tight end.
Here are the Top Five tight ends for fantasy football season:
1. Jimmy Graham
This should be an easy pick for fantasy football players. Graham has recorded more than 80 receptions the last three consecutive seasons, and he led the entire NFL in touchdowns last season with 16. Graham plays in a very "pass-happy" offense with Drew Brees at quarterback, so fantasy owners don't have to worry about him getting the ball enough.
2. Julius Thomas
Thomas isn't the second best tight end in today's game, but when you have Peyton Manning throwing you the football, high potential always follows. Last season, Thomas recorded almost 800 yards and 12 touchdowns with the Denver Broncos in his first full year starting. With Demaryius Thomas drawing double teams and Knowshon Moreno now in Miami, Julius Thomas will get a lot of balls thrown his way.
3. Vernon Davis
Davis is the safest pick of any tight end. He's only missed one game since 2008, and quarterback Colin Kaepernick loves to throw in his direction. Davis had a career-high 13 touchdowns last season for the San Francisco 49ers. Davis also has some of the best hands in the NFL, rarely dropping passes thrown his way. It's unlikely Davis will lead the league in any statistical category, but he is very consistent year in and year out.
4. Greg Olsen
The Carolina Panthers lost their top four wide receivers from last season, including veteran Steve Smith. With so many of Cam Newton's targets gone, Olsen will be by far the No. 1 go to guy in Carolina this season. Olsen has a team high 816 receiving yards catching passes from Newton last year. Olsen has eclipsed 800 yards the last two seasons. This former first round pick has done great things in Carolina since arriving from the Chicago Bears.
5. Jason Witten
The Dallas Cowboys tight end has been doing great things since 2003. Witten is very consistent, having not missed a single game since his rookie year in 2003. Even though Witten is one of the best, Dez Bryant has become Tony Romo's No. 1 target and Witten has never caught double-digit touchdowns in a season. Romo is also coming off back surgery.
Other Notables
Robert Gronkowski
Gronkowski is the biggest risk of any player in fantasy football, not just tight ends. When healthy, Gronkowski is the best tight end in the game and capable of putting up unbelievable numbers. Unfortunately, he has a lot trouble staying on the field. Very high risk, very high potential reward.
Antonio Gates
A very underrated tight end, who catches passes from a great quarterback, Phillip Rivers. Gates and Rivers are one of the most prolific quarterback-tight end combos of all time. Gates is very familiar with the San Diego Chargers system, and he has great hands. Still, Gates is now 34 years old, and he hasn't put up 1,000 yards since 2009.
Jordan Cameron
This could be the biggest steal of the draft. Last season, Cameron had 917 receiving yards and seven touchdowns with the Cleveland Browns. Star wide out Josh Gordon will miss the entire 2014 season, and the Browns offensive line is still questionable. Johnny Manziel and Brian Hoyer might want to throw to Cameron for short yardage relief and goal line opportunities.
