'The League' Season 6 Premiere Episode Recap & Spoilers: Fantasy Football Show Returns to FXX
The Season 6 premiere of "The League" on FXX centered on a fantasy football league draft that was to die for, literally.
The episode opens with Kevin MacArthur, played by Stephen Rannazzisi, participating in the scouting combine where college football players showcase their skills to NFL teams and scouts. MacArthur is no athlete, and the announcer even comments that "it looks like someone has seen 'Rudy' one too many times."
MacArthur's tryout shows him being dwarfed in ability by every big name in NCAA football. As he is being shamed in front of a group of players, he is startled awake, realizing the combine was a dream.
However, even in reality, Kevin is not safe from taunting. After his wife won the league's prized Shiva trophy and he took the dead-last Sack-o trophy, his friends and spouse mercilessly rub it in his face.
His wife Jenny's teasing is so cruel that Kevin begins calling the jokes "sack-xual abuse."
As the group tries to organize a time and date for the fantasy draft, Ted, a cameo from Adam Brody, video conferences with the league as a long-distance member. While he is chatting on the phone with his friends, he absent-mindedly steps into the street and is run-down by a car.
Now at Ted's memorial, the group realizes that Ted's body must be watched while awaiting his burial during a time of "sitting shiva." The league takes the shared name with their trophy as a sign that it must volunteer to watch the body and draft at the same time in the empty synagogue.
The draft cites many hilarious moments, like when Ruxin drafts Cameron Jordan, mistaking the defensive end for tight end Jordan Cameron. In the midst of their draft, the rabbi and Ted's parents return, interrupting their selections. They scramble to hide the evidence of their draft, and Taco MacArthur, Kevin's pothead brother, leaves the team board in Ted's coffin.
The next day during Ted's funeral, the group vows to steal the draft board from the coffin before it's buried. In a coincidental twist, both Jordan Cameron and Cameron Jordan are in attendance, as well as the Texans' J.J. Watt.
When the pro athletes offer to help with pallbearing duties, the league tries to dissuade them to keep their opportunity to retrieve the draft. However, when they insist, Andre, Taco and commissioner Pete take off running with the coffin.
When Watt catches up with them, he scolds them for being disrespectful and takes the coffin back to be buried. However, the group notices that Ted's body was dumped out of the casket. The last scene shows Taco bursting out of the coffin as it is being lowered into the grave, draft board in hand.
