Real Madrid News: Angel Di Maria Blasts Florentino Perez, Says Real Madrid Tried to Stop Him From Playing in World Cup
Angel Di Maria took a swipe at Real Madrid president Florentino Perez following his lucrative transfer from Bernabeu to Old Trafford last month.
Perez said in an interview on Friday that they made a lucrative offer to Di Maria, but the star midfielder declined to take the deal because he wanted to leave Real Madrid.
"Madrid made the best offer you could to a football player and he didn't accept," Perez said via ESPN FC. "No one was going to make that kind of money but Cristiano."
Responding to the criticism thrown against him, Di Maria reiterated that he did not inform the club about any desire to leave, and Real Madrid star Cristiano Ronaldo knows that he wanted to stay at Bernabeu despite the arrival of James Rodriguez.
"The Madrid president said he bought James Rodriguez because I wanted to go but I never said that," Di Maria said. "Cristiano always supported me because he knew I didn't want to go, but these things happen and the club decided to bring in other players. The 75 million they got through selling me was very good for the club."
Di Maria also blasted Perez for trying to prevent him from playing in a World Cup match. The Argentine international revealed that the club reportedly sent a letter to Argentina's football association, requesting not to use Di Maria during their final match against Germany because of a thigh injury he sustained during their quarterfinal match against Belgium.
"Yes, there was a letter from Madrid that arrived at about 11 o'clock on the day of the game," Di Maria said. "I was aiming to see if I could recover to play in the final, knowing that there was a risk of re-injuring myself. As soon as I got it, I tore it up and paid no attention."
The 26-year-old veteran also added that he is now happy at Manchester United, and he is confident that the Red Devils won't prevent him from playing for Argentina in future international matches.
