Disney, Lucasfilm Have ‘Star Wars’ Obi-Wan Spinoff in the Works
Disney and Lucasfilms are allegedly in the midst of developing an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff film, MakingStarWars reports.
MakingStarWars is the first to report on the possible spinoff film that is being created because of the immense popularity that the "Star Wars" Obi-Wan-Kenobi character has garnered from fans.
"I've heard from quite a few people now that an Obi-Wan Kenobi movie is in the works," the MakingStarWars excerpt reads. "For the spin-off movies they were initially going to stay away from any Jedi or Sith characters. But I'm hearing now that because of the popularity of Obi-Wan (fans recently voting for him on the official website etc) that an art team is now working with a writer on concepts for an Obi-Wan movie."
In addition to an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff allegedly in the works, a Hans Solo and a Boba Fett standalone film are also rumored to be future projects that fans will see within the "Star Wars" film franchise, Slashfilm reports.
Though neither Lucasfilms nor Disney has confirmed any of the rumored spinoff films, directors Gareth Edwards and Josh Trank are confirmed to be taking on the undisclosed standalone projects. [Slashfilm]
Should there be an actual Obi-Wan Kenobi film in the making, Slashfilm suggests that Ewan McGregor be cast to reprise the title role.
"All things considered, an Obi-Wan Kenobi standalone movie almost seems like it should be the first one in 2016. They have [Ewan McGregor], they have the tight window for a story, they have a popular character and they would get zero blow back from fans who might not want to see Han Solo as a kid or Boba Fett learning to fly," Slash Film's Germain Lussier writes.
Last year, during an interview with MTV, McGregor also expressed his enthusiasm over starring in an Obi-Wan Kenobi spinoff.
"I think it's a good idea," McGregor told MTV about getting his own film. "The only bit that I could get away with doing is after the last one I made, 'Episode III,' before Alec Guinness, there's that period where he's in the desert."
