Police Arrest Teenagers Responsible for Killing 920 Chickens
Four teenagers from the Fresno area have been arrested after killing 920 chickens with golf clubs. The group of teens broke into a local farm's chicken coop and massacred the chickens. A manhunt by police and the offer of a reward helped authorities find the teenagers.
The four teenagers broke into the Foster Farms facility in Caruthers, California, by breaching the farm's perimeter fence. According to NBC Bay Area, 18-year-old Gabriel Quintero was arrested along with a 15-year-old and two 17-year-olds.
Foster Farms called the killing "unconscionable act of animal cruelty" and said the chickens cost $5,000. Both the company and the nonprofit Animal Defense League each pledged a $5,000 reward for clues that would lead to the perpetrators.
According to KTLA, the teenagers broke into the facility and killed the chickens on Sept. 20 and had been on the run since then. However, tips provided to police thanks to local media reporting led to three of the underage suspects. Information had also spread through social media.
Officers from the Sheriff's task force arrived in Visalia, some 40 miles from the farm, on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. and arrested the 15-year-old and one 17-year-old. The other 17-year-old was arrested in Lemoore at 7 p.m., and Quintero was arrested at a Fresno apartment.
The Sheriff's Department charged all four with burglary and felony cruelty to animals.
The Associated Press reports that a Sheriff's Department special task force, which investigates farming-related crimes, made the arrests.
Not all the chickens in the facility were killed since they have several thousands at the farm. Foster Farms expressed its horror at the news. The company is a chicken producer certified by the American Humane Society.
"This disturbs us all," said Ira Bell, the company's spokesman. "It appears to be a very senseless act of animal cruelty."
