NBA Free Agent Rumors: Top 5 Players Still Available to Pick Up This Season
After the San Antonio Spurs dominated the Miami Heat in last year's NBA Finals, teams have been busy trying to improve their roster to the fullest.
The biggest name to move was obviously LeBron James, who will be playing with the Cleveland Cavaliers this season. Kevin Love will also be playing with the Cavaliers. Other notable players such as Carlos Boozer and Pau Gasol found new homes as well.
But time isn't over yet. The regular season isn't set to begin until Oct. 28, and free agents are still available. Here are five players teams should consider signing before the season begins:
1. Ray Allen
Easily the best free agent still unsigned. Ray Allen is the greatest three-point shooter in NBA history, regular season and postseason. The 39-year-old shooting guard has won two championships with the Boston Celtics and Miami Heat, hitting numerous clutch shots in his Hall of Fame career.
The most suitable teams for Allen would be the Spurs or the Cavaliers. The Spurs are the best three-point shooting team in the league, and they have an excellent bench. Allen would be able to get a lot of rest on the Spurs. With the Cavaliers, Allen could reunite with James and play in a weak Eastern Conference.
2. Rashard Lewis
Since being drafted in 1998, Rashard Lewis has had a very underrated career. Lewis is now 35 years old, and he's played for the Seattle Super Sonics, Orlando Magic, Washington Wizards and Miami Heat. Lewis has a great three point shot, making 38.6 percent of his career perimeter shots.
Unfortunately, Lewis has been battling a knee injury lately. The Dallas Mavericks signing him to a one-year deal, but he failed his physical when it was discovered he would need knee surgery. Lewis may miss a portion of the season, but he could still be a good addition to improve bench play.
3. Jermaine O'Neal
Jermaine O'Neal has been a good power forward since entering the league in 1996. O'Neal has spent time with the Portland Trail Blazers, Indiana Pacers, Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, Boston Celtics, Phoenix Suns and Golden State Warriors. O'Neal has certainly been able to adapt to a number of different systems.
O'Neal isn't the best power forward in the game, but at 6-foot-11, he can still grab rebounds and give a team quality minutes. O'Neal is also a 71.5 percent shooter from the free throw line; very impressive for a big man. Last season with the Warriors, O'Neal averaged more than 20 minutes per game, while making more than 50 percent of his shots from the field.
4. Andrew Bynum
Andrew Bynum has done a lot of great things in the NBA, but a questionable attitude and injuries have held him back recently. Standing at 7 feet, 285 pounds, Bynum was an elite center with the Los Angeles Lakers. He helped the team win two consecutive NBA Championships.
Bynum has only started 19 games over the last two seasons. He missed the entire 2012-13 season with the Philadelphia 76ers because of a knee injury. Bynum's time with the Indiana Pacers and Cavaliers was short lived, but he could be worth a look.
5. Kenyon Martin
Like most others on this list, Kenyon Martin is an aged veteran who has played for multiple teams. Martin has played for the New Jersey Nets, Denver Nuggets, Los Angeles Clippers and New York Knicks.
Martin is still an average rebounder and a tough forward, but his scoring abilities have decreased since he left Denver. Still, he could help a team for the right price.
Other notable free agents include Richard Hamilton, Greg Oden, Rodney Brewer and Emeka Okafor.
