Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant will miss the start of the 2014-15 NBA season after being diagnosed with a "Jones fracture" in his right foot, the team announced on Sunday.

Thunder general manager Sam Presti confirmed the news in a press conference on Sunday afternoon, saying that there's no specific incident that led to the injury. No timetable has been set, but Durant will likely be out for six to eight weeks for the Thunder.

"From what I've been told, a Jones fracture is the most common surgical procedure performed on NBA players as of late," Presti said of Durant's injury via ESPN. "It has happened enough so that there is enough of a body of work to look at an average recovery time."

Durant will undergo further examinations this week to determine the best possible treatment, but Presti confirmed that they are leaning towards having their superstar undergo surgery.

Durant, the reigning Most Valuable Player, played for 18 minutes during the Thunder's 118-109 win against the Dallas Mavericks on Friday, but Presti said that the team is convinced that the superstar forward did not sustain the injury during that game.

"Because it's a stress injury, it happened over time," Presti said. "The fact that Kevin mentioned it when he did is a real fortunate piece of this because if he had continued to play on it, it would continue to get worse. So that it was identified when it was identified, and that the pain, or achiness, was enough to mention it, is a positive."

Durant, who won his first MVP award last season after averaging 32.0 points to go along with 7.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, has only missed six games over the past five seasons, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Without Durant, All-Star point guard Russell Westbrook will carry bigger responsibility on his shoulders in their first several games in the upcoming season, but it is unclear at this point how Westbrook's knee will hold up.

Westbrook averaged 21.8 points to go along with 6.9 assists and 5.7 rebounds per game last season but missed 36 games due to his ailing knee.
