Cristina Saralegui Tells 'Despierta America' Why She Wanted to Die
Cristina Saralegui has been opening up about all her struggles on "Despierta America."
The former Univision talk show host explained that losing anything, such as a job or a spouse, is difficult to deal with and something she talks about in her new book, "Pa'rriba y Pa'lante, Mis Secretos Para Triunfar en tu Carrera, Tu Relación y tu Vida."
Saralegui was praised for her honesty as a talk show host, but she said that it got her into trouble and caused a lot of tears.
"I've hurt many people by mistakes because I don't have a link between my brain and my mouth," she said. "Someone asks me something, and I, like an idiot, would say everything that I thought. And that's wrong."
Saralegui also said that when her son was 19, he was very diagnosed as bipolar. He tried to commit suicide a few times, and she even saw him try to take an entire bottle of her sleeping pills. And it was such a horrible time for her and her family that she thought she would either kill herself or die.
The host was also facing troubles because of her career. After defining herself as a host for 21 years, she didn't know who she was as a person. And the worse thing was that she was trying to run from the pain through liquor.
"You can't get out of that by drinking whiskey and tequila," she said. "I tried to numb myself."
When she stepped out on set, she got quite emotional and said she felt at home.
Saralegui also revealed that she would love to be working again but that she wouldn't want to do what she did on her show. Instead, she'd love to give other people the opportunity to shine and she would enjoy doing more interviews.
The Cuban host got her wish and was able to interview filmmaker Guillermo Del Toro.
The two were sitting on a couch when all of a sudden it broke. The two are surprised, but both managed to play it cool. Del Toro responded by grabbing another churro, and Saralegui says it was her butt that took down the chair.
