Getting a brand new phone can be an exciting time, but choosing a carrier is not always the easiest process. If you are thinking about which carrier to use with a new iPhone 6, it is important to look at what each carrier has to offer as far as service and coverage areas are concerned.

AT&T might look like an attractive option for you if you have an iPhone 6. Let's take a look at AT&T's track record so far with the iPhone 6.

First, it is worth looking at the coverage maps. AT&T claims that they cover up to 99 percent of the nation, but if you look closely, you can see that rural areas and less populated areas are not serviced very well.

Next, you have to look at prices of the plans. With an iPhone 6, you are committed to a data plan. This means an extra monthly charge for the data and Internet you use. The minutes and texting quotas are no longer of concern to AT&T and other wireless carriers because almost every carrier is giving free minutes these days.

With a data plan, you really have to ask yourself how much data will you use. If you are constantly checking your e-mail, surfing the web and listening to Internet radio, you are going to need a bigger data plan. The more data you use, the more you will pay. AT&T has an entry level 300 megabyte (MB) plan for $60 that comes with unlimited minutes and texts.

300 MB will not satisfy most consumers, though. The best way to figure out how much data you use is by utilizing AT&T's data calculator or by looking at your recent bills to see how much data you average per month.

You will probably want at least 2 GB of data; that is enough to stream music and surf the web. AT&T offers that for $80 per month. If you need more than that, be prepared to pay. For a 4 GB plan, you are looking at $110 per month.

So there you have it. AT&T's iPhone 6 plans are awfully expensive but the coverage (for the most part) covers almost the entire U.S.
