The San Francisco Giants have defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in five games to advance to the 2014 World Series.

This is the Giants' third World Series appearance in the last five seasons. In 2010, the Giants defeated the Texas Rangers. Just two years later, the Giants dominated the Detroit Tigers in a four game sweep in the 2012 World Series.

With the Giants already leading the National League Championship Series three games to one, the Cardinals were desperate. In Game 5, the score was tied 3-3 entering the ninth inning. With two men on base, first baseman Travis Ishikawa hit a three run home run to give the Giants the victory.

"The Giants win the Pennant, the Giants win the Pennant," many Giants fans screamed referencing the famous "Shot Heard 'Round the World" hit by Bobby Thompson in 1951 against the Brooklyn Dodgers. Although that was more than 60 years ago and in an entirely different location, longtime Giants fans still remember that historical hit.

The Giants will face the American League champions, Kansas City Royals, in the World Series. This will be just the second time ever that two wild card teams face off in the World Series. The first time was in 2002, when the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim beat the Giants in the 2002 World Series.

The Royals were 3-0 against the Giants in the regular season.

Pitcher Madison Bumgarner has proven to be one of best -- if not the best -- pitchers in all of baseball. During the regular season, Bumgarner won 18 games and posted a 2.98 ERA. Unlike the Los Angeles Dodgers Clayton Kershaw, Bumgarner has an impressive playoff portfolio. Against the Cardinals in this NLCS, Bumgarner pitched 15.2 innings, while allowing just three runs.

Most likely Bumgarner will start game one of the World Series.

Over the years the Cardinals have been one of the most successful franchises in all of sports, but the Giants have had their number. Since 2002, the Cardinals and Giants have played each other three times in the playoffs, and the Giants have won every time.

The Giants have won seven World Series titles, five of which were won while playing in New York City.

During this postseason, Venezuelan slugger Pablo Sandoval leads the Giants in total hits with 14. Sandoval, former World Series Most Valuable Player always seems to show up big in the postseason. Buster Posey and Hunter Pence have been playing great as well during this postseason run.

The biggest surprise for the Giants this postseason has been pitcher Yusmeiro Petit. Petit hasn't allowed a single run yet in the playoffs. Relief pitcher Santiago Casilla has also been terrific for the Giants with four saves and zero earned runs in the playoffs.

The Giants are scheduled to play the Royals in Game 1 of the World Series on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at 8:07 p.m. EST. That game will be played at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri, because the American League defeated the National League in the annual All-Star Game.
