Cristina Saralegui 2014: Star Says She Is Not An Alcoholic
Cristina Saralegui continues to open up about one of the most difficult times in her life.
The former talk show host was on "El Gordo Y La Flaca," where she further explained about her routine when her son was first diagnosed as bipolar.
"I would go home, and I would lie down in bed...with a shirt that I [wouldn't let anyone wash.] I would be there the entire night crying until Marcos [her husband] would look for me and tell me, come mama, it's time to go to sleep," she said.
At the time, her son was going from hospital to hospital, and he had attempted suicide. Therefore, Saralegui would turn to alcohol to numb her pain.
She still had work to go to in the morning, so she began drinking heavily to distract her from her own problems.
Saralegui clarified that she was never an alcoholic because for her it wasn't about lacking control of how much she drank. She never had to go to rehab to get better. She didn't want to go to rehab because she wanted to be home with her husband and her dogs.
Instead, she enlisted the help of a friend who did work with people with addictions. She asked for the tools she needed to help her move forward.
Speaking about the past, Saralegui also said that she also had a reminder of the late Celia Cruz.
The Cuban singer left Saralegui the blue wig she used at the 2000 Grammys.
"The funny part is that Celia always used a perfume that was called Joy. Smell it," she said about the wig. "It smells like Celia."
Saralegui was also given a shekere by Tito Puentes on her talk show. The instrument came with drumsticks, which were signed. The shekere is her granddaughter's favorite toy.
