Disney 'Frozen' Movie News: Elsa Costume Dresses Gross $3M in the US as Broadway Show, Animated Short Develop
On Tuesday, Nov. 4, Disney reported that sales of costumed dresses inspired by Elsa, the snow queen protagonist from the 3D computer-animated blockbuster "Frozen," have exceeded $3 million in revenue in the U.S. alone.
If you're wondering why you've seen so many young women in bejeweled powder blue dresses, now you know why.
In addition, the holiday season has yet to kick-off, which could mean even more capital, according to CNN.
"The powerful connection families around the world have with 'Frozen' and its characters is truly a phenomenon that has only continued to grow over the last 12 months," said Paul Gainer, executive vice president of Disney Retail.
It looks like the smash hit musical fantasy-comedy film is turning into a multi-million dollar franchise and kids won't "Let It Go" anytime soon. Apparently, neither will Disney; the company is replacing the classic Epcot ride Maelstrom with a new attraction based on the hit movie that accumulated nearly $1.3 billion in worldwide box office revenue.
There is also another "Frozen" project in the works. During the ABC Television Network special "The Story of Frozen: Making an Animated Classic," which aired Sept. 2, it was revealed the animated short "Frozen Fever" will debut in Spring 2015, Variety reports.
According to The Wrap, the log line released by the studio noted that the short will be more playful than its more mature predecessor.
"In the short, it's Anna's birthday and Elsa and Kristoff are determined to give her the best celebration ever, but Elsa's icy powers may put more than just the party at risk," it says. "Olaf, the snowman, also will make an appearance in the too."
Although a sequel does not look like it's on the cards just yet, an Elsa-inspired blizzard may hit the Great White Way. On Oct. 16, Broadway.com reported that Disney is "already talking to directors" for a Broadway stage adaptation of the Oscar-winning cultural phenomenon. Disney Theatrical president Thomas Schumacher revealed in an interview with The Hollywood Reporter that he's "already talking to directors" and has a design concept.
