A 23-year-old woman visiting Spain died in a tragic freak accident while she was trying to take a selfie on the Puente de Triana bridge in the city of Seville.

The victim was identified as Sylwia Rajchel, a medical student from the city of Lublin in eastern Poland who was vacationing in Spain. However, she slipped and fell 15 feet off the ledge of the famous bridge while she was attempting to take a picture of herself around midnight on Saturday, reports Mirror.co.uk.

"This was a tragic accident, and we are looking to make that stretch of boulevard along the river safer," a city spokesman told Central European News, according to the New York Post.

Rajchel, who was studying nursing at the University of Medicine in the southern Poland village of Posada, went into cardiac arrest after she hit the concrete. Medics say they managed to revive her at the scene, and she was then rushed to the Hospital of Traumatology. However, despite their attempts to save her, she later succumbed to her injuries, according to CEN.

"She was a beautiful, smiling girl who had her whole life ahead of her," said the victim's mother, Bernadeta, 44. "It's hard to believe what's happened, that I will never see Sylwia again."

"Going to Spain was a dream come true for my daughter," Bernadeta said, reports the New York Daily News. "She had taught herself the language and was hoping to work there in the future after finishing her studies. ... It breaks my heart. I feel this is [a] nightmare that is not happening."

The 19th century bridge is a popular tourist attraction that stands across the Guadalquivir river.

A city spokesman said that officials will take steps to prevent another tragedy.

"We are looking to make that stretch of boulevard along the river safer," he said.
