'Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare' Hands On Review: Team Deathmatch Mode and More on Xbox 360
I went over to my local Redbox to see if they had "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" available to rent. It's always good idea to try a game before you buy it, and that's what I did.
I typically only play the multiplayer "Team Deathmatch" modes in "Call of Duty" games. So, when I opened the game, I joined a multiplayer game. Immediately I noticed the hefty changes in the game; players were jumping very high with high-tech suits on.
I was not expecting the "double-tap jump" to have such an unrealistic impact on the game. The double-tap jump is a simple double jump that sends your character soaring high over the map. While I appreciate the fact that "Advanced Warfare" is set in the future, these characters flying all over the map was annoying.
As I tried my hardest to get my first "Advanced Warfare" multiplayer kill, I realized that the grenade feature was actually an attachment to my arm and not a hand grenade. I did not like this.
I looked for my secondary grenade, which in previous games has been a smoke grenade or a flashbang. For whatever reason, my secondary grenade was actually a temporary shield that I was able to use for a few seconds.
After only getting one or two kills I stopped playing for a few hours. Then, I saw I was invited to an Xbox Live Party to play "Advanced Warfare."
I accepted the request and realized that the game was a little different than the Team Deathmatch mode to which i was so accustomed. This game involved acquiring a ball and putting it into a net before getting shot -- pretty much basketball mixed with capture the flag.
This game was a little confusing, but it was strategic to keep the ball away from the other team and it was still fun.
Overall, my first few hours of "Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare" multiplayer mode was not what I was expecting. But maybe I should have realized that they were trying to appease the younger generation by unveiling all of these super-futuristic things.
Back in the day, the Call of Duty franchise represented a "realistic" military simulator that was also fun to play; Now soldiers can jump high above the map and use bionic arms. Some gamers are bound to miss those classic games with realistic simulations of war and combat -- as realistic as video games can get, that is.
Hopefully it gets better -- like at least introducing more robust gameplay options for realism in multiplayer, because the game is fun at its core. I will likely return the game to the Redbox and hope it drops in price on Black Friday.
