YouTube Music Key Paid Music Service: Newest Player in a Crowded Room of Streaming Music Services
First there was iTunes, then Pandora, then Apple Radio, Spotify and so many others. Now there are dozens of programs to choose from when wanting to listen to streaming music. The newest to enter the market may be the website that is one of the most popular on the Internet: YouTube.
Wednesday YouTube added YouTube Music Key. It is a paid service that costs $7.99 per month. Similar services from Spotify or Beats cost about $9-14.
The subscription service will get rid of those annoying ads that seem to come before every video viewers want to watch. It will also include higher quality audio than the free videos and audio on YouTube.
"We want to give fans more ways to enjoy music on YouTube, but also give artists more opportunities to connect with fans and earn more revenues," Christophe Muller of YouTube told the New York Times.
The first few countries to receive Music Key will be the United States and a few European countries including Britain. They will start receiving the
However, it will not be the full version of Key it will be a beta version. YouTube wants to see how specific users like the service and they want to plan a full release to the entire world sometime in 2015.
For those who decide to pay for Key they will receive special access to download songs for offline play. This is similar to what Spotify lets users do. That means users will not have to be online and that they can save the songs to listen to later.
As a small bonus, those users who pay for Music Key will also get access to Google Play Music. Play Music has been trying to steal subscribers from Spotify and this may help them do that.
What do you think of the new service from YouTube? Will it be a good service or a flop?
