In a twist, a Brazilian man in adding to the definition of a civil union by walking down the aisle with two women.

According to the BBC, Public Notary Claudia do Nascimento Domingues from Sao Paulo said the man and the women are entitled to family rights and noted that there is no law that prohibits a union among three people.

The approval of the marriage has triggered outrage and has some calling it "absurd and totally illegal." Lawyers said the move is "something completely unacceptable which goes against Brazilian values and morals".

The threesome has declined to speak to the press, and according to the report, has lived in Rio de Janeiro together for three years and share bills and other expenses.

Domingues told the BBC that the group has been together for three months and shares a joint bank account, another move not prohibited by law.

She called the move a reflection of the changing idea of family.

"We are only recognizing what has always existed. We are not inventing anything," Domingues said. "For better or worse, it doesn't matter, but what we considered a family before isn't necessarily what we would consider a family today."

The BBC said it is not clear whether courts, service providers and private companies such as health insurance providers will accept the ruling.
