Yoselyn Ortega Murder Trial: Nanny Who Allegedly Killed Two New York Children Blames Parents
The nanny accused of murdering two young children in New York in 2012 claimed that she was the real victim, passing blame on to the kids' parents, according to newly released court documents.
Yoselyn Ortega allegedly stabbed the children of Kevin and Marina Krim that she was hired to care for in the family's Upper West Side apartment on Oct. 25, 2012. Ortega complained that she was underpaid for her services and forced to do chores in the parents' home.
"You don't know what they made me do. You don't know what that lady did," Ortega told police of her former employer. "I had to do everything and take care of the kids...I worked as a babysitter and she wanted me to do everything."
Her conversation with officials occurred while she was recovering in New York-Presbyterian/Weill-Cornell Medical Center, where she was being treated for injuries from self-inflicted stab wounds.
Ortega appeared in Manhattan Supreme Court on Friday, where Justice Gregory Carro held a hearing on whether her statements to authorities on the conditions of her work were admissible.
The 52-year-old also reportedly made other disturbing confessions about the attack on Lulu, 6, and Leo, 2, in the apartment's bathroom, including that she used two knives to stab them and that Lulu, who she stabbed first, tried helplessly to "fight back."
After she was taken to the hospital, Ortega's erratic behavior included callously telling her NYPD she wanted to "watch Spanish channel on TV" within the week of the double homicide. She also had bouts where Ortega repeated the name of the kids' mother. However, in other moments, the nanny seemed to realize what she had done.
"Oh my God, I'm sorry. I'm sorry for what I've done. Relieve me of my misery," Ortega said according to the New York Daily News.
Ortega's lawyers said they will use a psychiatric defense at the trial, where she faces a maximum sentence of life in prison.
The Krim family now has two remaining children: their middle child, Nessie, who was not home during Ortega's attack and a young son that was born in 2013.
