Mexico President Enrique Peña Nieto's Stepdaughter Sofia Castro Storms Off When Asked About Comments on 43 Missing University Students
A video that was recently released has many questioning why Sofia Castro, the stepdaughter of Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto, would be allowed to go to Las Vegas for the Latin Grammys amid the backlash her family is facing.
Given the turmoil in Mexico and Castro's comments that made her seem indifferent about the 43 missing students from Ayotzinapa, "El Gordo Y La Flaca" host Raul de Molina was one of the people who was surprised to see Castro in Las Vegas. He explained that he thought the young actress was simply in the city to vacation, but when he spotted her at the Latin Grammys, he knew it was his shot to speak to her.
"I tried to give her the chance to clear up what happened on the red carpet in Mexico," he said, referring to the moment when Castro said she was more focused on winning an award than the missing students.
De Molina said he waited for her, but as soon as Castro and her team spotted the reporter, they tried to evade the cameras. Eventually, Castro began to run and de Molina chased after her.
At one point, Castro promised she will be back.
De Molina insisted that the interview will only take a second, and his persistence paid off, as he was finally granted an interview with her.
"Sorry," she said. "It's nice to see you. I'm very happy."
But the pleasantries ended there. De Molina immediately asked her about the comments she made that insulted many.
"Obviously, you're in the eye of the hurricane after everything that has happened, after the declarations you made on the red carpet in Mexico about the students. Tell me, what happened there," de Molina said.
Castro then looked away from de Molina, and one of her handlers said thank you before leading her away.
A follow-up video on "El Gordo y La Flaca" features de Molina explaining that people are wondering why Castro attended the event. De Molina added that many have taken to social media to criticize Castro and her mother, Mexican first lady Angelica Rivera.
One of her critics was Jalisco governor Aristóteles Sandoval, who ended up deleting his tweet.
"La Gaviota's [Rivera] daughter doesn't know what's going on in her country," he said. "She only knows about showbiz."
Even HuffPost Voces tweeted about Castro's behavior following the issues in Mexico.
"In the midst of the crisis and pain in Mexico, Peña Nieto's stepdaughter, Sofia Castro, doesn't stop partying," the publication said on Twitter.
