"The Walking Dead" companion series, while still in the works, has begun casting its major roles. Reports surfaced Thursday that actor Cliff Curtis will play its lead character.

E! News confirmed Curtis' involvement toplining the AMC drama spin-off. He is no stranger to television roles; his credits include roles on Fox's "Gang Related," "Missing" and "Body of Proof."

While many of the details behind the characters these actors will be playing are still under wraps, Curtis is believed to be attached to the role of Sean Cabrera, who is described as a good man.

Curtis will join previously announced cast members Frank Dillane and Alycia Debnam Carey.

The spin-off is said to feature new characters, taking place at a different location and possibly a different time than the current "The Walking Dead" AMC television series.

"The Walking Dead" comic book author and series executive producer Robert Kirkman is set to also serve as executive producer on the show along with Dave Erickson. Erickson will become the showrunner if the pilot is picked up for more episodes, which is likely considering the tremendous success of the original series. Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert will also follow the jump from the original series to executive produce the new companion show.

"There are many corners of 'The Walking Dead' universe that remain unseen in the shadows," Kirkman said in a statement announcing the pilot. "Being given the opportunity to shine a light into those corners and see what lurks out there is an absolute thrill. I know the fans are anxious to hear what Dave and I have been cooking up for this new universe of 'The Walking Dead,' and I'm happy to be one step closer to sharing it with them."

AMC, in a similar move, is also in the process of launching a "Breaking Bad" spin-off starring Bob Odenkirk called "Better Call Saul." The new series has already been greenlit for Season 2 and will take place before the events in the Emmy-winning "Breaking Bad."
