Ryan Murphy, the creator and producer of "American Horror Story" and "Glee," has casted Academy Award-winning actor Cuba Gooding Jr. to play American football player and convicted felon O.J. Simpson in his upcoming FX miniseries.

Entertainment Weekly reports that the first season of Murphy's FX series, titled " American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson," will be a 10-episode miniseries chronicling Simpson's 1995 two-count murder trial.

"[The People v. O.J. SImpson] is a look at the O.J. Simpson trial told from the perspective of the lawyers that explores the chaotic behind-the-scenes dealings and maneuvering on both sides of the court, and how a combination of prosecution confidence, defense willingness, and the LAPD's history with the city's African-American community gave a jury what it needed: reasonable doubt," reads the press release obtained by Us Weekly.

"American Crime Story" will be based on the book "The Run of His Life: The People v. O.J. Simpson" by Jeffrey Toobin, EW reports.

Acting alongside Gooding Jr. will be Golden Globe nominee Sarah Paulson, who will play the role of prosecutor Marcia Clark.

While "American Crime Story'" Season 1 will center on the Simpson trial, the following seasons will delve into other headline-making true crime stories.

The "American Crime Story" production and creative team will include Murphy, who will direct and produce, "The Hunger Games" producers Nina Jacobson and Brad Simpson, and "Glee" producer Brad Falchuk. Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski will come on board as screenwriters for the series.

Deadline reports that production for the crime series will commence early next year in Los Angeles.

So far, neither Gooding Jr. nor Paulson has spoken publicly on their newly casted roles.

Fans, however, have been weighing in on Twitter about the casting, and it appears that social media users are in favor of Gooding Jr. playing O.J. Simpson.
