The Sony Playstation 4 has always seemed to be one step ahead of its rival, the Xbox One, during development and this cycle just keeps repeating itself.

Sony first beat out the Xbox One in being the first to announce a release date for its next-gen console, but then Sony took it a step further. While we stood around and waited for an official release date for the Xbox One, it turned out that the Nov. 15 PS4 release date would be a full week ahead of the Xbox One's Nov. 22 debut. That's an obvious running start if there ever was one.

But then more praise came in for the PS4, because not only was it going to be released earlier but it would be significantly cheaper. It costs $100 less and it comes out first -- which one seems more appealing right off the bat?

And now, Sony's Shuhei Yoshida is talking about a PS4 app coming to Android and iOS mobile platforms to accompany the PS4 console.

Extreme Tech explains what to expect with the PS4 app as it prepares to be rolled out.

"With this companion app, you can send and receive all of your PSN messages, manage your per-game invites, purchase games, and even trigger remote downloads on your PS4 over the Internet. Even better, the PlayStation app serves as a way for developers to deliver touch-based gameplay on the PS4 without having to develop their own apps from scratch."

Although Xbox has had the SmartGlass app, there has been no announcement of an app to match the one Sony will have for the PS4. Extreme Tech says Microsoft is "on the same path" but that Sony is "miles ahead."

At which point will the advantages of the PS4 translate to a consensus of the PS4 being the dominant game console? When, and if that day arrives, the $100 extra price tag on the Xbox One could easily turn into a disaster.
