Dave Chappelle Tour: Comedian Talks Being Put in a Chokehold by New Orleans Police Department Officer, Thinking It's 'OK'
During his comedy show at the Saenger Theater in New Orleans earlier this month, Dave Chappelle recalled a time when he was choked by police while filming on a movie set in the '90s.
Jarvis DeBerry, a writer for The Times-Picayune, says he attended Chapelle's show in New Orleans and heard the comedian say that he was choked out by police while he was working on his "first movie" in the '90s.
At the time of the incident, Chapelle said he was dressed as a mugger as per his role. He recalled stepping off of the set while still wearing his costume. The set was surrounded with police tape to emulate a crime scene, and when Chappelle ducked under the tape to exit the set, he was immediately choked by police.
Chappelle told his audience that while he was being choked by a police officer, another member of the film's crew urged the police to stop choking him and explained that he was an actor in the film.
Chappelle said the police officer let go of his chokehold and responded to the crew member.
"Well why didn't he say something?" the officer reportedly said.
According to DeBerry, Chappelle concluded his story by sharing the strangest part of the story.
"The weirdest thing about being a black man being choked by the police is that you don't even wonder why it's happening," he said."You just think, he said, 'OK, here we go.'"
In addition to discussing his experience with police brutality, Chappelle also discussed a wide array of controversial topics and people during his set, including Ray Rice, Donald Sterling, Paula Deen, Ebola, and racism, the Hollywood Reporter reports.
"I thought racism was over, but it's not," said Chappelle, adding that African-Americans are now returning to the racial "hot seat." "We had a good run."
The Hollywood Reporter claims that Chapelle also mentioned the comedian Hannibal Burruss, who prompted the recent rape allegations against Bill Cosby. He described Burruss as "the guy who accidentally killed Bill Cosby."
