Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's 8-year-old biological daughter Shiloh recently appeared on the red carpet of Jolie's "Unbroken" premiere sporting a short hair cut and a boy's tuxedo.

Shiloh's masculine appearance on the red carpet prompted a controversial discussion among social media users and psychology experts about whether Pitt and Jolie's support of their daughter's decision to identify as a boy was noble or harmful, the IJR reports.

Back in 2010, Pitt told Oprah Winfrey that in addition to dressing like a boy, Shiloh also demanded that her parents address her as either John or Peter, People reports.

"She only wants to be called John. John or Peter. So it's a Peter Pan thing," he says. "So we've got to call her John. 'Shi, do you want ...' - 'John. I'm John.' And then I'll say, 'John, would you like some orange juice?' And she goes, 'No!'" Pitt said.

In a separate 2010 interview with Vanity Fair, Jolie revealed that Shiloh considers herself to be like her brothers and thus she and Pitt chose to dress her as a boy.

"She wants to be a boy," she said. "So we had to cut her hair. She likes to wear boys' everything. She thinks she's one of the brothers."

Jolie also mentioned Shiloh's male attire during an interview with the Daily Mail.

"Some kids wear capes and want to be Superman and she wants to be like her brothers. It's who she is. It's been a surprise to us and it's really interesting, but she's so much more than that -- she's funny and sweet and pretty."

And while Jolie and Pitt are fully supportive of their child's gender identity, some social media users oppose the issue while others support it.

"Fox and Friends" also addressed the topic on its show, which featured Lyss Stern, CEO of divamoms.com, Pitt-Jolie's decision while parenting expert Cherie Corso opposed the family's decision and argued that Shiloh would become the subject of ridicule, Fox Insider reports.
