NFL Trade Rumors: Kirk Cousins Wants to Be Dealt if Robert Griffin III Remains Starter in 2015 Season
Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins will reportedly ask for a trade if Robert Griffin III will be named the team's starting QB in the 2015 NFL season.
Dianna Russini of NBC Washington revealed that Cousins wants to be traded if he will continue to be a backup quarterback, saying that there is no reason to stay if there will be no competition for the starting spot.
"Kirk Cousins says that if Redskins name RG3 starting QB he would like to be traded," Russini posted on Twitter.
"Cousins explained if there is no QB competition, there's no point. Although he would approach it as 16 games until free agency," the NBC sports anchor added in another tweet.
Cousins started in five games this season for the Redskins when Griffin went down with an injury, but was also benched in favor of Colt McCoy after failing to live up to expectations.
The 26-year-old quarterback, the 102nd overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 1,710 yards with 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions. His passer rating of 86.4 is the lowest among the Redskins' quarterbacks this season.
When asked about reports about his trade demands, Cousins backed off and said that he is just looking to compete for the starting spot heading into the final year of his contract with Redskins.
"I think more than anything I want to compete. You come into the league, and you want to compete," Cousins said via Washington Post. "When I was drafted, I was told there was no competition. That's the way it has been. That's what I've known. When you come into the league, you want to compete."
While he has been saying all along that he wants to start whether with the Redskins or in another team, Cousins also reiterated that he loves playing in Washington and admitted that he needs to improve in order to become the team's No. 1 quarterback.
"I'm focused on getting better," Cousins said via ESPN. "We all know I have a long ways to go. I have a lot of work to do. I had two awful quarters and threw nine interceptions, which is way too many. I have plenty to work on to get better."
