'Lizzie Borden Took an Ax' News: Spinoff Extended to 8 Episodes as it Imagines What Could Have Happened After Murder Trial
Lifetime recently ordered two additional episodes of its new miniseries "The Lizzie Borden Chronicles," Deadline reports.
The miniseries was originally created to be six episodes long but will now be extended to eight episodes in total.
News of the two-episode addition follows the successful debut of Lifetime's original movie, "Lizze Borden Took an Ax," starring Christina Ricci as the infamous Borden character.
Ricci will reprise her role as Lizzie Borden in the new Lifetime miniseries about the real-life Lizzie Borden who was acquitted of murdering her father and stepmother.
Clea Duvall, who played Borden's mother in the film, will also be reprising her role in the series.
Entertainment Weekly adds while the series is inspired by actual events, it will take some creative liberties to embellish and recreate certain events surrounding Borden's life.
Ricci recently elaborated on the upcoming series and the producers' decision to have more creative liberty this time around at Friday's Television Critics Association winter press tour in Pasadena, TV Line reports.
"It's a fictionalized version of what happens after the trial, as she continues to misbehave," Ricci explained. "This is an imagining of what could have happened."
She added, "There are no limits of behavior. There are no rules. It's the ultimate playing a fantasy."
When asked to elaborate on her experience as she prepared to reprise her role for the series, Ricci described it as "fun."
"I never expected to play her again, but she's really fun in this interpretation," Ricci said. "This version of her is actually a lot more satisfying. She has a sense of self-awareness. But at the same time, we do deal with the complexities and emotions behind what created this monster."
Deadline reports that the "Lizzie Borden Chronicles" series came to be after the movie "averaged 4.4 million in its Jan. 25 premiere."
There is no exact date on when the series will premiere on Lifetime. However, Deadline reports the series will air sometime in April of this year.
