Further casting for the show has yet to be confirmed. Broadway suggests, however, that Cynthia Erivo, who played the role of Celie in the 2013 " The Color Purple" revival in London, might join the New York cast alongside Hudson.

Meanwhile, Oprah Winfrey will come on-board "The Color Purple" Broadway production team as a producer working alongside other fellow producers Scott Sanders and Roy Furman.

Prior to the Broadway revival, stage director, John Doyle created a successful London revival of "The Color Purple" in 2013 that debuted at the Menier Chocolate Factory, Entertainment Weekly reports. NBC New York adds that Doyle's revival encompassed a more "stripped down" version of the original Broadway production that featured an elaborate set that cost over $10 million to bring to life. Doyle allegedly cut 30 minutes of material from the original production and garnered immense critical acclaim for his remake of the show.

One notale review of Doyle's "The Color Purple" remake came from The New York Times critic Ben Brantley, who took note of the director's simple approach to the show and praised him for relying less on big production and more on the talent of the actors.

The original Broadway production of "The Color Purple" debuted in 2005 with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and a book by Marsha Norman.

Following its original Broadway debut, many well-known celebrities joined the show's cast during its three-year run including Chaka Khan, Bebe Winans and Fantasia Barrino, NBC New York reports. The show later closed in 2008 after 30 previews and 910 regular performances.

The premiere date for "The Color Purple" Broadway revival has yet to be announced.
