Oscars 2015 Nominations: 'Birdman' Leads Nominees with Nine But Fails to Score Editing Nomination
The 2015 Academy Awards have announced their annual Oscar nominations, with "Birdman," "The Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Boyhood" leading the Best Picture race.
The three films were joined for Best Picture by "The Imitation Game," "The Theory of Everything," "Selma," "American Sniper" and "Whiplash."
In the directing category, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu was nominated for "Birdman" alongside Richard Linklater for "Boyhood," Wes Anderson for "The Grand Budapest Hotel," Bennett Miller for "Foxcatcher" and Morten Tyldum for "The Imitation Game."
"Birdman's" Michael Keaton led the way in the Best Actor category alongside Eddie Redmayne for "The Theory of Everything," Benedict Cumberbatch for "The Imitation Game," Steve Carell for "Foxcatcher" and Bradley Cooper for "American Sniper."
Front-runner Julianne Moore led the Best Actress race for her work in "Still Alice." She was joined by Felicity Jones for "The Theory of Everything," Rosamund Pike for "Gone Girl," Reese Witherspoon for "Wild" and Marion Cotillard for "Two Days, One Night." Jennifer Aniston went missing for her work in "Cake." The actress was nominated for the SAG, Critics Choice and Golden Globes and was credited for building a strong campaign.
The Best Supporting Actress nominees included Patricia Arquette for "Boyhood," Keira Knightley for "The Imitation Game," Emma Stone for "Birdman," Meryl Streep for "Into the Woods" and Laura Dern for "Wild." Jessica Chastain went missing the category after scoring Critics Choice and Golden Globe nominations for her work in "A Most Violent Year."
"Birdman's" Edward Norton led the supporting actor race with Ethan Hawke for "Boyhood," Mark Ruffalo for "Foxcatcher," J.K. Simmons for "Whiplash" and Robert Duvall for "The Judge."
Argentina led the foreign film category with "Wild Tales." The film will compete alongside Poland's "Ida," Estonia's "Tangerines," Mauritania's "Timbuktu," and Russia's "Leviathan."
Among the films that were shut of the Best Picture category included "Gone Girl," "A Most Violent Year," "Mr. Turner" and "Unbroken."
"Birdman" led the nominees with nine, but missed the Best Editing category, shutting it out of a chance to win the Best Picture. No film in recent history has won the Best Picture award without an editing nomination and it is doubtful "Birdman" will have a chance at winning the Oscar.
In 2006, "Brokeback Mountain" was the clear front-runner to win Best Picture. However, the film was not nominated for Best Editing and as a result, "Crash" won the Best Picture.
"The Grand Budapest Hotel" also scored nine nominations while "The Imitation Game" landed eight nominations. "American Sniper" and "Boyhood" scored six nominations while "Selma" scored a disappointing two nominations. The film was shut out of the Best Director race and the Best Actor race.
Mexican director Alfonso Cuaron announced the nominees alongside J.J. Abrams, Academy president Cheryl Boone and Chris Pine. The Academy Awards will be announced on Feb. 22 with Neil Patrick Harris hosting the show.
