Google Glass Eyewear Price and Release: Last Day to Buy Google's Eyewear, Company Announces End of Sales of Current Verision
Today is the last day that Google Glass is available for purchase from the Play Store or anywhere else.
Google announced it was ending sales of its Google Glass eyewear on Friday but says it plans to develop a new version and launch the smart glasses as a consumer product again in the future.
Google is removing the Google Glass from the Google X division to continue as a standalone project.Former Apple executive and Nest founder Tony Fadell and Google Glass team manager Ivy Ross will work together to develop the next version. No timescale for the next launch has been given.
Google Glass is a smartphone you wear on your face. It operates mostly through voice recognition and control. The 640 x 360 resolution panel sits right above your eye (similar to a 25-inch HD display viewed from a distance). It has 16GB of storage, a 5 megapixel camera with 720p video, WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity. It can even be fitted with prescription lenses.
The device can tell you the time, answer questions, take pictures and record video among several other functions.
Google Glass was rolled out in April 2012 with much fanfare but did not catch on. Glass was offered to select technology enthusiasts as part of the Glass Explorer program in which users test out the advanced eyewear and provide feedback.
The device's reviews have varied. Enthusiasts have commended its user-friendly functionality, while others criticized the lack of applications and limited battery life.
A huge concern among users is whether or not it is appropriate to wear a device that can take pictures or send messages during social engagements.
A Google spokesperson told TechCrunch last week the Explorer program was a great way to see how people would use the technology. Now that it has feedback, the company decided to close the program and focus efforts on developing future versions of Glass.
The current version of Google Glass will continue to work without official software updates. Google Glass users will continue to receive support.
Current Google Glass products cost $1,500, according to BBC News.
