Home Depot Shooting in Manhattan, NYC: Employee Fatally Shoots Supervisor in Murder-Suicide
An employee fatally shot his supervisor before turning the gun on himself in a Manhattan Home Depot.
The 31-year-old employee reportedly walked into the store and argued with his 38-year-old manager before shooting him. Witnesses say they heard someone scream "F*** you" before shots were fired.
Hundreds of customers were in the New York City store located in Manhattan's Chelsea neighborhood during the shooting. Some of them were said to be stocking up for the recent blizzard warning.
The victim is known on social media as Moctar Sy and the shooter is identified as Calvin 'Kirk' Esdaile Jr. from Brooklyn. Both are dead.
Shots were fired around 2:40 p.m. in the lighting section of the store. A source said the suspect was talking to one employee, then immediately pulled out his gun when he saw the manager.
Witnesses say the two started arguing, according to New York Post.
"It was crazy," shopper Susan Lowry said. "Some people jumped on the floor, others hid behind aisles or ran for the exits."
A Bronx resident said he witnessed the whole thing.
"I saw people running, and I should have run with them,'' the man said.
"But I looked into the next aisle. I felt that I had nothing to fear because the shooter had just shot himself in the head."
The manager was rushed to Bellevue Hospital but could not be saved. Authorities say he was shot three times including once in the chest.
An employee from Home Depot said the suspect, who was pronounced dead on the scene, may have been fired a few days prior to the shooting. The manager had just returned from a vacation in France to visit his wife and child.
"The thing about Calvin is that I never thought he was capable of this. We are both from the Caribbean islands. He was working there since 2011," Home Depot employee Alex Pereira said.
Reports say Calvin was from Jamaica.
