Rihanna Tattoo Meaning & Artist: Singer Gets Henna-Inspired Hand Ink In the Dominican Republic
During her recent visit in New Zealand as part of her "Diamonds World Tour," Rihanna got a traditional Maori tattoo, which was painfully hammered into her skin using a chisel and a mallet. Now, the Barbadian singer adds a new henna-inspired hand tattoo to her body art collection.
Rihanna was spotted puffing away and getting high with the Californian rapper Snoop Dogg just last weekend in the Dominican Republic, as part of her ongoing tour. However, that doesn't mean that she can't get inked from her favorite tattoo artist; the singer flew out Keith "Bang Bang" McCurdy out to the Dominican Republic.
The singer has her trust in the famed New York City-based tattoo artist, who has also done work on Justin Beiber and Cara Delevingne. The celebrity tattoo artist, accompanied by his colleague Cally-Jo of Bang Bang NYC studio, flew out to the Dominican Republic on Sunday to meet up with Rihanna for a lengthy 11-hour session, drawing an intricate henna-inspired design all over her right hand.
"We drew on her hand from 7 p.m. to midnight," said McCurdy. "We were drawing and changing things. I'd take a break and Cally-Jo would draw, then I'd draw... The inspiration was henna art, we wanted something really decorative, feminine and sexy."
"She had something preexisting on her hand," he added. "So it was a little bit of a cover up, but also making it look good... We needed to work with what she already had."
After the long session, the tattoo artist admitted that the singer's tattoo was the most challenging he'd ever done on Rihanna before.
"This one had elements to it that were very unique, covering up pieces of it, combining pieces of it, making up new pieces," said McCurdy.
Rihanna was indeed happy with the result.
"Ri flipped out!" said McCurdy. "Absolutely loved it, loved it! It's a hard thing when you get a tattoo and not absolutely love it. It's uncomfortable to have something on your hand, especially when it's in such a visible spot and she's such a visible person."
