Eva Longoria-Produced Comedy 'Telenovela' Casts Three Latino Series Regulars; Plot Points About Series Revealed
"Telenovela," a new Eva Longoria-produced comedy, has officially begun to gain momentum as the series' regulars have been announced.
Amaury Nolasco ("Prison Break"), Jencarlos Canela ("Pasión Prohibida") and Diana Maria Riva ("The West Wing") will star alongside the former "Desperate Housewives" star, Longoria, who'll portray Ana Maria Calderon, an ambitious telenovela star who boasts drama on-screen and off-screen.
The new series "Telenovela" will offer a behind-the-curtain look at what happens on the set of a fictional Spanish soap opera, titled "Leyes de Pasion." According to sources, Ana Maria Calderon's ex-husband, who cheated on her, will be cast as her love interest on "Leyes de Pasion." Somehow, she's able to move past outrage, but she quickly regrets the decision to "bury the hatchet."
Nolasco, who has Puerto Rican roots, will play the role of Rodrigo, who portrays a villain on "Leyes de Pasion," Riva, whose heritage traces back to the Dominican Republic, will play the role of Ana Maria's best friend, Mia. And Canela, born to Cuban parents, will appear as Xavier, another telenovela superstar and Latin heartthrob. However, the rest of the potentially diverse cast has yet to be unveiled.
"Our show is not a Latin show," Longoria said at a recent panel, according to the Hollywood Reporter. "The perspective is basically mine. It's about a telenovela star who doesn't speak Spanish."
Written and produced by "Cougar Town" writers Chrissy Pietrosh and Jessica Goldstein, the series will be co-produced by Ben Spector ("The Wedding Band"). The premiere date has yet to be scheduled, but it is expected air during the 2015-16 season.
NBC ordered 13 episodes of the half-hour single-comedy series following the success of the Golden Globe nominated CW network dramedy (based on a Venezuelan telenovela) "Jane the Virgin," which stars first-time Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez as a pregnant virgin who must deal with the complexities of adulthood ...and soon parenthood.
Stay tuned for more updates and developments for "Telenovela."
