Alberto Nisman Death: Argentine Foreign Minister Denies Nisman's Claims That He Was Involved in Iran Cover up
Before Argentine prosecutor Alberto Nisman was found dead in what is highly regarded as a suspect situation, he accused Argentina's president Cristina Fernandez de Kirchner and other top officials in her government of covering up what he claimed was an Iranian involvement in the 1994 bombing of a Jewish community center.
One of the people that Nisman claimed was involved in the cover-up, Foreign Minister Hector Timerman, is defending himself against the accusation.
In an interview with NPR the Jewish Foreign Minister said that he has only ever attempted to help catch those involved in the 1994 bombing that killed 85 people, and is in no way responsible for any cover-up.
He stated emphatically: "I can tell you we have done everything possible, the president and myself, to help the judge to bring justice to the victims of the attack on the Jewish center," going on to say, "I have enough evidence to show the accusation [against me] was false, or was wrong at least."
Nisman had formally accused Timerman of carrying out a secret diplomacy with Iran that was intended to protect Iran from being implicated in the 1994 bombing.
Timerman explains how Nisman had accused him of something that he was not able by law to commit, namely: “to withdraw the orders of arrest of the Iranian suspects of putting the bomb in the Jewish center."
"That is impossible because by law only the judge can do that,” said Timerman.
According to Nisman, Argentina was negotiating to get Iranian oil in exchange for Argentine wheat. It was the dead prosecutor’s contention that as part of this deal Iran would not be implicated in the attack.
Timerman said this was not a feasible scenario, explaining that: "Everybody who knows something about the oil business knows that Argentina cannot use Iranian oil, because it is a very heavy oil and we cannot process such a heavy oil."
