NBA Trade Rumors: Los Angeles Lakers Exploring Jeremy Lin Trade, Charlotte Hornets, Detroit Pistons & Indiana Pacers Best Fits
The Los Angeles Lakers are having a terrible season with a 13-36 record.
Competing in a strong Western Conference hasn't helped, and Kobe Bryant is out for the season with a shoulder injury. The Lakers obviously won't be making the playoffs this season, and many fans think they have to make a move before the NBA trade deadline.
According to multiple reports, the Lakers are actively shopping point guard Jeremy Lin.
As bad as things may look, Lin has performed better than most people are giving him credit for. This season, Lin leads the Lakers team in assists with 225. Lin is also averaging 6.5 assists per 36 minutes with a below average supporting cast, and without Bryant on the floor. Lin is also averaging his fewest turnovers since his rookie season.
For the Lakers, this experiment hasn't worked out quite the way they had hoped. Head coach Byron Scott has routinely benched Lin, and has gradually decreased his playing time. The Lakers are attempting to trade Lin soon so they can save salary cap space and build for the future. Lin's contract is counting $8.3 million against the Lakers' salary cap.
The Detroit Pistons recently lost their starting point guard Brandon Jennings because of an Achilles tendon injury. The Pistons have yet to show any interest in trading for Lin, but they are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference standings with a 19-31 record. Another team that may want to show interest is the Charlotte Hornets. The Hornets are currently without their best passer, Kemba Walker, and they are in seventh place in the NBA's Eastern Conference with 22 wins.
The Hornets presently rank 27th in team assists.
Possibly the best fit for Lin could be with the Indiana Pacers. Without Paul George, the Pacers' offense has been terrible ranking 26th overall in scoring. Indiana's leading passer is Donald Sloan, who is averaging just 4.4 assists per game. As crazy as it may seem, the Pacers are still in the playoff mix. Despite having just 18 wins, the Pacers are just three wins out of a playoff spot.
Another good fit for Lin would be the Miami Heat. The Heat are the second-worst passing team in the league this season. Only Dwyane Wade (who is injured) is averaging more than 4.5 assists per game for the Heat this year. Trading for Lin would mean taking an $8 million-plus cap hit, but it would only be for half a season.
Lin is still just 26 years old, and he has shown he can be a quality player in this league. His playing days with the New York Knicks were the most memorable, but it's unlikely the Knicks will trade for his services again. Trading for Lin could be beneficial because if he plays good for the remainder of this season, that team may want to re-sign him this upcoming offseason.
The NBA Trade deadline is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. EST
