Oscar award-winner Alejandro González Iñarritu has been a topic of discussion as much for his speech about the Mexican government as for the words Sean Penn chose to use when presenting him with an award. The "Birdman" director recently spoke to Telemundo's "Al Rojo Vivo" about the 2015 Oscars and Mexico.

"From the moment you are nominated, there's that possibility," he said. "But I like to always keep my expectations low. For me it was surprising the number of awards the movie received."

González Iñarritu has been living in Los Angeles for 14 years, but he still has Mexico on his mind. During his Oscar speech, González Iñarritu said that the people of Mexico deserved a better government.

The following day, the government responded.

"As a country it brings us pride to know that Mexicans can triumph -- here and outside Mexico -- because as a government it's our job today to make things better," President Enrique Peña Nieto said.

On the Telemundo show,  however, González Iñarritu did not back down from what he said.

"Life cannot be sustained with the way that it is in Mexico, with that insecurity and impunity and that cynicism on corruption," he said. "More than the president, it's a governmental system that has been imposing itself for many decades in Mexico. It's like a doctor who murders people instead of saving their lives."

González Iñarritu added that someone who is in the position of power should be trying to do something for the people.

The director also spoke about Penn, saying that he laughed very much at his comment and that he loves the actor. He said it was an "inside joke" that played in a public place without any context.
