NFL Free Agents Update: New York Jets Sign Darrelle Revis, Miami Dolphins Ink Deal With Ndamukong Suh
The New York Jets have officially acquired cornerback Darrelle Revis on Wednesday night, while the Miami Dolphins secured a deal with defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.
According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, Revis agreed to sign a five-year deal worth $70 million with the Jets, leaving defending Super Bowl champion New England Patriots, who tried to keep him this offseason.
Revis, who played with the Jets from 2007 to 2012 before he was traded to the Tampa Bay, revealed on Tuesday that he will not return to New England, but he declined to reveal details about the offer from the Patriots.
"I'm not going to speak on the numbers," Revis told reporters. "I think the biggest decision for me was to just come back home. I have a lot of history with the Jets organization, and I just felt like it was, you know, a no-brainer to come home, be back home and make a marriage."
Sources indicated that the Patriots and Revis did not come close to agreeing to a new deal. New England reportedly decided to let go of 29-year-old cornerback after learning that he received a contract offer with $39 million fully guaranteed.
Revis, who was selected 14th overall by the Jets in the 2007 NFL Draft, also added that he just signed with the team "where his heart is" after spending six seasons with the organization. In his second tour of duty for the Jets, Revis said his ultimate goal is to help the team win a Super Bowl.
"I'd do everything in my power to try to bring a championship to this organization, and I still feel that way," Revis said. "That's something I want to be part of. The thing I want to bring to the organization is winning. That was one of the big reasons to come back home. I still have that mindset."
However, Revis and the Jets will compete with a much-improved Miami Dolphins squad in the American Football Conference East next season.
The Dolphins, who finished third in the AFC East last season with their 8-8 card, signed Suh to a six-year, $114 million deal on Wednesday, which made the former Detroit Lions DT the highest-paid defensive player in league history.
Suh, who was considered as the best player available on the free-agency market this offseason, spent the first five seasons of his career in Detroit, where he tallied 36 sacks and 239 tackles.
