Kentucky Republican Sen. Rand Paul will announce that he is running for president on April 7, USA Today reports.

Paul will make the major announcement at a rally at the Galt House in Louisville.

Supporters of the senator said his campaign team has already started making phone calls to supporters in Kentucky and throughout the nation inviting them to the event.

Yet, it is possible that Paul will make the announcement April 7 to say that he is not running for president.

The senator said he will make a decision on running by April. Since then, he has visited early caucus and primary states like Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina a number of times.

A source said it is not likely that Paul will announce a decision on not running.

"I have gotten a phone call on it and I was told that there was going to be some type of announcement or event," said Nate Haney, chairman of the Jefferson County Republican Party. "I have my suspicions that he's going to announce for president."

The April 7 announcement in Louisville is predicted to be the official campaign launch for Paul, MSNBC reports.

"This will be an official announcement, not an exploratory committee," said a source close to Paul who spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss his plans.

"Everything will happen pretty quickly over the next couple of weeks," another source close to Paul said.

Immediately after the event, Paul is scheduled to host events at four major early voting states. He will host an April 8 event in New Hampshire, April 9 event in South Carolina, April 10 event in Iowa and April 11 event in Nevada.

The 52-year-old politician has worked to reassemble his father's, Texas libertarian congressman Ron Paul, supporter base.

He has also worked to extend his reach to traditional Republican audiences and those who usually don't follow the GOP.
