Victim in Grisly Craigslist Stabbing Was Proud Mother to Be
The pregnant woman who was attacked after responding to an ad on Craigslist was pictured just a month before proudly wearing a "Mommy to Be" sash, ABC News reports.
Michelle Wilkins was stabbed and had her baby cut out of her stomach after trying to pick up baby clothes that she found on Craigslist. Wilkins remains in the hospital, expected to recover, but the baby did not survive.
The 26-year-old woman went to high school in Guatemala and studied at a college in North Carolina. Wilkins studied sustainable development and sold handmade pottery.
"Thanks to everyone for the outpouring of sympathy and support," the Wilkins family said in a statement released Thursday. "Longmont first responders and the United Hospital staff saved our daughter's life for which we will always be grateful."
Police identified the woman who stabbed Wilkins as Dynel Lane, a woman who posted an ad on Craigslist claiming that she was selling baby clothes.
"We grieve for the many victims of this senseless attack, but mostly for a precious child whose life was ended before she had a chance to live," the Wilkins family statement read.
Lane is married and has two teenage daughters, according to CNN. She appeared in court Thursday but has not yet entered a plea.
Wilkins, who was seven months pregnant, arrived at Lane's home around noon for the baby clothes on Wednesday in Longmont, Colorado.
The 34-year-old Lane is held on $2 million bail and is accused of stabbing Wilkins and removing the fetus.
Authorities say this incident is unlike anything else the local district attorney has seen in 32 years of practicing law.
Lane's 35-year-old husband, David Riley, told police he returned home after leaving work to meet his wife and saw her covered in blood.
"She told David she just miscarried, and the baby was in the bathtub upstairs," the police report said.
Lane reportedly told her family she was pregnant months earlier and even showed them an ultrasound photo back in December. The woman reportedly lost a 19-month-old son from a previous marriage to due accidental drowning back in 2002.
