Ian Gallagher is up against the military for falsifying a federal document, theft, sabbotage of government property and going AWOL. He could face up to five years in prison. The next step will be deciding whether he will face a court-martial.
Ian's sister, Fiona, argues that he is clinically bipolar and instead of punishing him, the military should be helping him get better. She says his behavior has been crazy. His sister, Debbie, tries to further prove Fiona's point by saying he almost hit her with a baseball bat.
Fiona says their mother was bipolar and they know the signs of it.
While discussing Ian's case, the Sergeant listens and asks Fiona if she thinks Ian should be on medication for his condition.
"Yes!" Fiona replies.
The Sergeant asks if Ian is unable to care for himself.
"Sometimes, yes." she replies.
Fiona's testimony could help Ian receive a lesser sentence or even avoid any punishment if the military agrees that his behavior is due to his mental illness.
Ian's family all appears at his informational hearing to discuss the next steps of his possible punishment and are very supportive in trying to keep him out of prison. Will it help though?
