Ellen DeGeneres and Portia De Rossi Share Their Opinions on Dolce & Gabbana Scandal [Pic]
On Saturday, Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi spoke to several media outlets about boycotting the fashion brand Dolce & Gabbana.
Many celebrities have boycotted the brand following the controversial comments made by Dolce & Gabbana founders about children conceived via artificial insemination and in vitro fertilization.
DeGeneres and de Rossi spoke to E! News at the 2015 GLAAD Media Awards in Beverly Hills, California and described Dolce and Gabbana's comments as "ignorant."
The pair also revealed that they will no longer be wearing or purchasing Dolce & Gabbana clothing.
"The only thing you can say is that, you know, we're all entitled to free speech," de Rossi, 42, told E! News. "However, I just don't understand who they are. I don't understand why they would want to say that."
DeGeneres and de Rossi also spoke with Extra to weigh in on the controversy. When asked to chose one word to describe the founders of the fashion brand, DeGeneres chose the word ignorant once again.
"I would say the word ignorant, you know this isn't just about gay couples, it's a lot of people who are trying to have children," DeGeneres explained. There are a lot of people who use a surrogate and their partner can't have a baby for one reason or another. It's unbelievable that somebody would be that ignorant, and why now?"
Earlier this month, Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana spoke to Italian publication Panorama about their negative opinion about artificial insemination.
"You are born to a mother and a father. Or at least that's how it should be," Dolce said. "I call children of chemistry, synthetic children. Rented wombs, semen chosen from a catalog."
Following their comments, Elton John conducted a boycott against Dolce & Gabbana for calling artificially inseminated children "synthetic" and suggesting that gay couples should be parents to IVF children.
"How dare you refer to my beautiful children as 'synthetic,'" John wrote in an Instagram post. "And shame on you for wagging your judgmental little fingers at IVF -- a miracle that has allowed legions of loving people, both straight and gay, to fulfill their dream of having children."
