HBO Go: Sling TV is the Latest Device to Offer an HBO Add-On at $15 Per Month
Sling TV will become the latest provider to offer an HBO add-on to its device.
Sling TV will offer HBO content without a cable subscription, CNet reports.
Those who subscribe to Sling TV will be able to access the live HBO channel and a large library of HBO on-demand content, similar to that provided to other platforms, for $15 per month.
Sling TV does not yet offer HBO, but it will be available in time for the season premieres of two of HBO's most popular shows, "Game of Thrones" and "Silicon Valley," on April 12. The exact launch date will be soon be known.
Sling TV is available across multiple platforms. Sling TV can be used on Roku devices, Amazon Fire TV and Xbox One. It is also capable of being used on Android and iOS devices, as well as Macs and PCs.
Sling TV on the Xbox One recently came to North America offering a 30-day free trial.
In order to add HBO to a Sling TV account, subscribers will have to be signed up for the base package of channels, which costs $20 per month. Adding HBO to the account will make the monthly cost of Sling TV with HBO $35 per month.
The Sling TV base package called the "Best of TV" package includes channels such as ESPN, AMC, A&E, TNT and more, according to IGN.
Sling TV's addition of HBO to its content takes the excitement out of the HBO Now exclusive deal with Apple TV. Apple TV was set to be the only device capable of playing HBO Now content for a period of three months.
Sling TV's HBO add-on channel will offer an almost identical experience to HBO Now. Soon, Apple TV devices will be joined by other popular devices such as the Roku and Amazon Fire TV in playing HBO content.
The reason Sling TV will be able to also show HBO content through its service is because pay-TV companies are exempt from the exclusivity clause that Apple currently has with Apple, according to Bloomberg.
What do you think about Sling TV offering HBO as an add-on?
