Ben Carson Says Hip-Hop Hurts African American Communities
Potential Republican presidential candidate Ben Carson is blasting the entire hip hop culture, claiming it plays a significant role in "destroying the African American community."
According to Business Insider, in an Easter Sunday interview on WBLS Radio, the outspoken Carson also hinted he believes the lifestyle has turned blacks away from what should be their faith-based values.
"We need to reestablish faith in our communities and the values and principles that got us through slavery, that got us through Jim Crow, and segregation, and all kinds of horrible things that were heaped upon us," said the retired and noted neurosurgeon. "Why were we able to get through those? Because of our faith, because of our family, because of our values, and as we allow the hip-hop community to destroy those things for us, and as we grasp onto what's politically correct and not what is correct, we continue to deteriorate."
Carson's stance and reasoning immediately drew attention on the call-in talk show -- not to mention angry responses. Business Insider adds one caller went as far as to counter that hip hop "has been a force for good for African-Americans."
"When I talk about the hip hop community, I'm talking about the aspect of modern society that pretty much dismisses anything that has to do with Jesus Christ, that's what I'm talking about," countered Carson.
According to MSNBC, 63-year-old Carson also recently sparked controversy when he argued "Americans can learn from the Islamic State's willingness to die for their cause."
He later compared the group ISIS to the Americans who waged the Revolutionary War against the British. "A bunch of rag-tag militiamen defeated the most powerful and professional military force on the planet," he charged. "Why? Because they believed in what they were doing. They were willing to die for what they believed in. Fast forward to today. What do we have? You've got ISIS. They've got the wrong philosophy, but they're willing to die for it while we are busily giving away every belief and every value for the sake of political correctness."
