Mother of Convicted Boston Marathon Bomber Declares U.S. 'Will Pay for my Sons'
Not long after Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was found guilty for his role in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombings, his mother rushed to his defense and made threats that the U.S. "will pay" for convicting her son.
The jury handed in a guilty verdict Wednesday afternoon convicting the 21-year-old terrorist for all 30 counts charged against, including conspiracy to use a weapon of mass destruction and bombing a public place. The charges also covered a carjacking that took place in the aftermath of the attack, the deadly shooting of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology police officer, and a gunfight in Watertown, Massachusetts, in which Tsarnaev and his deceased brother tossed explosives at police.
During the trial, defense lawyers argued that Tsarnaev participated in the attack, which killed three people and injured 264 others on April 15, 2013, because he was under the influence of his older brother, Tamerlan, who died during a shootout with police three days later.
Although Tsarnaev has confessed to the attack, his outraged mother, Zubeidat Tsarnaeva, said that the jury got the verdict wrong. She also stated that the U.S. will suffer in an angry rant sent to the media/technology website Vocativ
"They will pay for my sons and the sons of Islam, permanently!!!" she threatened.
"My sons are innocent, as innocent as all those who are being killed by your country," she added. "Today they are killing Muslims, and tomorrow will come your turn and he who doubts this is deeply mistaken!!!!" she wrote.
She went on to say, "I love my sons immeasurably!!!!!! Precious, glorious and rare in character and essence. ... The best sons of their mother, and also the best sons of their religion!!!!!!"
During the sentencing phrase of the trial, it will be up to the same seven women and five men who sat on the jury to decide whether Tsarneav should face life in prison or death.
