'Outlander' Season 1 Episode 10 Recap: Claire Is In Trouble, Separated from Jamie Because of One Girl's Jealousy
A lot happened on Saturday, which has probably set up what will for the rest of the season of "Outlander."
As the episode ended, Claire is the one in trouble and has been separated from Jamie because of one girl's jealousy. However, we also learn Geillis is far more mad than anticipated.
There are two arcs to Saturday's episode: one focusing on Jamie and the other on Claire. While the two intertwine as the episode progresses, each one places an emphasis on the individual character.
Last episode ended with Jamie (Sam Heughan) and Claire (Caitriona Balfe) finding a straw doll under their bed. Jamie explains it is placed when someone wants to wish ill will on a couple. He rightly deduces it was Laoghaire (Nell Hudson).
After interrupting a very steamy sex scene, Murtagh (Duncan Lacroix) tells Jamie the Duke of Sandringham (Simon Callow) has returned. We heard about this already in the teasers the show provided last week. However, now we get the whole picture: they know the Duke may be gay and he has affection for Jamie, improving his chances of clearing his name. However, Claire warns the Duke and Black Jack Randall (Tobias Menzies) have a relationship of sorts, but she does not reveal how she knows this. It'd be an awkward conversation, to say the least.
Meanwhile, Claire confronts Laoghaire about the curse doll and, after some prodding, reveals she put it there and Geillis sold it to her. Looking for Geillis, Claire does not find her at home but the woods where she is performing a "summoning" that looks very similar to the dance ritual she and Frank (also Tobias Menzies) witnessed on the first episode.
After the ritual, Geillis reveals to Claire she is pregnant with Dougal MacKenzie's baby. Dougal (Graham McTavish), we also learned, is married to a woman named Mora, but Geillis hopes she and Dougal can be together, despite the fact she is also married.
As they walk through the forest, Claire hears a baby crying. As also explained in the spoilers summary, Geilles tells her not to worry that it's just a changeling left for the fairies to take back. Claire is having none of it. Even though she traveled through time by touching magical rocks, she still does not believe in magic.
Although she tries to save the baby, she arrives too late. As she cries, Jamie finds her and tells her of Ned's plan to help clear his name. Ned (Bill Paterson) would argue that Black Jack committed acts against the Scottish people and they would try to have him stationed elsewhere.
Jamie and Murtagh were to take the petition to him and say what Black Jack had done. Claire took the opportunity to approach the Duke first and, though he did not believe her at first, she persuaded him by alluding that the Duke is allied with the Jacobite rebels. In a flashback, Frank says the Duke was suspected of being a Jacobite and Claire added this to the fact that Dougal had given Geillis a bracelet he as given by the Duke.
Following the threat, the Duke allows hearing Jamie's petition and says he will send it to London, if Jamie stands as his second in a duel against the McDonald clan. Jamie agrees. Before the duel, however, more drama ensues as it turns out that Dougal's wife has died. Drunk, angry, and sad, Dougal is thrashing Castle Leoch and Claire helps knock him out. However, it appears that Geillis placed a curse during the summoning.
Step one of her plan is done. During the banquet to receive the Duke, Geillis poisons her husband in front of everyone. Claire is the only to know after she smells the faint aroma of cyanide.
Yet, she's not the only one who knows what is happening. Collum (Gary Lewis) also suspects his brother and Geillis are up to something and exiles Dougal along with Jamie, who got in trouble for partaking in the duel. However, Dougal and Jamie leaving make Claire and Geillis vulnerable. As soon as they leave, they are arrested for witchcraft all thanks to Laoghaire since she tricked Claire.
