‘Girls’ Star Jemima Kirke Reveals She Had an Abortion in College [Watch]
"Girls" star Jemima Kirke recently opened about her decision to get an abortion in 2007 when she was a college student, Us Weekly reports.
The Center of Reproductive Rights released a video of Kirke talking about her abortion for the center's Draw the Line PSA campaign. Kirke revealed that while attending the Rhode Island School of Design, she became pregnant and made the decision to terminate the pregnancy.
"My life was just not conducive to raising a happy, healthy child. So, I decided to get an abortion," she said.
In an attempt to hide her pregnancy from her mother, Kirke decided to fund the abortion by herself using all of the money in her checking account and getting some money from her boyfriend at the time.
Because Kirke was struggling to afford the costly price of an abortion, she opted to not get anesthesia, which would have cost her even more money.
E! News reports that Kirke filmed the PSA to raise awareness on the negative impact "of anti-choice policies on access to reproductive health."
According to E! News, the Oklahoma and Kansas senates passed bans on dilation and evacuation, which is a common procedure for second trimester abortions.
Naturally, the Center for Reproductive Rights has condemned the bans.
Kirke concluded the PSA by revealing her personal wish that political issues surrounding the body of women would be eliminated by the time her daughters reach their twenties.
"I would love if when [my daughters are] older and they're in their teens or their twenties, that the political issues surrounding their body were not there anymore, you know, that they have one less thing to battle around their bodies," she said.
She continued, "I've always felt that reproductive issues should be something that women, especially, should be able to talk about freely, especially amongst each other. And I still see that today -- I still see shame and embarrassment around terminating pregnancies, getting pregnant."
