Target Stores 2013: Shoppers Save Money After Retail Giant Offers Discount
This Holiday season hackers took aim at retail giant Target reportedly stealing more than 40 million user accounts over a two week period.
Consumers who used debit or credit cards in Target stores between Nov. 27 and Dec. 15 may be affected by the mass data breach. Luckily online orders placed during that same period were not affected. The nation's second largest retailer has said that debit card PINs and credit card security codes were not hacked.
This breach in security obviously doesn't look good for Target at all. However the company has addressed the issue head on and is offering not one, but two services to help out those affected. The first is a straight up 10 percent discount on another purchase at Target. The 10 percent discount is only valid for this weekend and ends today so you better act fast. Maybe ditch the plastic, though, and pay in cash instead. It never hurts to take extra precautions. Target hasn't been sitting on the sidelines during this snafu, however.
"We recognize this has been confusing and disruptive during an already busy holiday season," Target CEO Gregg Steinhafel said in a statement on Friday. "Our guests' trust is our top priority at Target and we are committed to making this right."
Secondly, the company is offering free credit monitoring tasked at identifying fraudulent purchases made with the stolen user accounts. Details on the service are scant at the moment, but at least Target is offering to help fix the mess.
Steinhafel went on to say that customers "will not be held financially responsible for any credit and debit card fraud."
"[T]o provide guests with extra assurance, we will be offering free credit monitoring services," Steinhafel said. "We will be in touch with those impacted by this issue soon on how and where to access the service."
The data breach has also led to bankers like J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. to temporarily limit debit card withdrawals to $100 a day and purchases will be capped at $300. This is a big headache for last minute shoppers who hoped to use this weekend to buy a bunch of presents.
