Comic book geeks were thrilled to hear a rumor this past weekend that FOX would release an X-Men meets Fantastic Four crossover movie, but is the rumor true?

Over the weekend, The Motley Fool reported that the X-Men and a rebooted version of the Fantastic Four would see their worlds collide in an upcoming film. The website has since retracted their report.

"A previous version of this article inaccurately reported a planned film release that combined both X-Men and Fantastic Four. The Fool regrets the error," the website wrote.

FOX, in addition to Marvel Studios and Disney, owns the rights to certain Marvel characters, including the X-Men and Fantastic Four. According to MTV, FOX must be developing movies based on the entities "every few years," or else the rights will go back to Marvel Studios.

In December, FOX hired Simon Kinberg, who is a writer and producer for X-Men: Days of Future Past as well as the upcoming Fantastic Four reboot, to create a new universe of intertwining movies.

"I have a lot of ideas on how to [build] those brands and do what everybody is thinking of these days: Be like Marvel," Kinberg told The Hollywood Reporter. "I want to be able to build stories over multiple movies."

Kinberg, however, never explicitly stated that Wolverine and Professor X would be hanging out with The Thing. In fact, Mark Millar, a FOX creative consultant, outright denied the claims.

"I keep seeing 'news' that X-Men & FF movies are crossing over," Millar said via Twitter. "No, they're not. They exist in same universe but movies stand alone."

The Motley Fool said it got its facts wrong thanks to a Wikipedia article titled "Fantastic Four vs. X-Men" and an article on GeekExchange which spoke of a "possible X-Men crossover."

X-Men: Days of Future Past will be released May 23, 2015. X-Men: Apocalypse will be released May 26, 2016. Fantastic Four will tentatively see a Jun. 19, 2015 release.
